Lesson 18
What Are Hit Points, Armor Class, and How Does Damage Work?
Why heroes don’t fall from one hit… and why every blow matters.
This is the part everyone thinks they understand.
And the part beginners secretly fear.
Numbers.
Damage.
Health.
But don’t worry — this isn’t a math class.
This is a story about how close you are to falling.
Let’s make it simple.
And legendary.

❤️ HIT POINTS (HP) — HOW CLOSE YOU ARE TO DEFEAT
Hit Points do not mean “how much meat you have left”.
HP represent:
-
Stamina
-
Luck
-
Willpower
-
Minor wounds
-
Near-misses
-
Grit
When you lose HP, it doesn’t always mean you’re bleeding.
It means:
-
You’re tired
-
You’re stressed
-
You’re getting pushed closer to the edge
A hero at 1 HP isn’t a corpse.
They’re a warrior barely holding on.

💥 WHAT HAPPENS AT 0 HP?
When your HP drop to 0:
-
You fall unconscious
-
You’re not dead (usually)
-
You start making death saving throws
Death in D&D is dramatic — not instant.
Heroes fall.
Stories continue.

🛡️ ARMOR CLASS (AC) — HOW HARD YOU ARE TO HIT
Armor Class answers one question:
👉 “Did the attack actually connect?”
AC represents:
-
Armor
-
Shields
-
Dexterity
-
Training
-
Reflexes
High AC doesn’t mean you’re invincible.
It means:
-
Attacks miss
-
Blades glance off
-
Arrows hit armor instead of flesh
🎯 HOW ATTACKS WORK (THE CORE LOOP)
Almost every attack works like this:
🎲 d20 + attack bonus vs Armor Class
-
If the roll meets or beats AC → hit
-
If it doesn’t → miss
That’s it.
No extra steps.
⚔️ DAMAGE — WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE HIT
If an attack hits, then you roll damage.
Damage represents:
-
Actual wounds
-
Pain
-
Force
-
Magical impact
Different weapons and spells deal different damage.
Examples:
-
Sword → slashing
-
Arrow → piercing
-
Fireball → fire
-
Lightning → lightning
Damage is subtracted from HP.

🧠 IMPORTANT: DAMAGE ≠ INSTANT DEATH
Big damage doesn’t mean instant death.
It means:
-
You’re closer to going down
-
The fight just got serious
-
Tension rises
Even massive hits are part of the story.
🩸 CRITICAL HITS — WHEN LUCK TURNS VIOLENT
If you roll a natural 20 on an attack:
🔥 Critical Hit
-
You hit automatically
-
You roll extra damage dice
Crits are not “skill”.
They’re fate kicking the door open.
Sometimes the dice smile.
Sometimes they laugh.

🧠 THE BIG SECRET ABOUT HP & AC
HP and AC are story meters, not realism meters.
-
AC = how hard you are to hurt
-
HP = how long you can keep fighting
They exist so combat:
-
Has tension
-
Has pacing
-
Feels heroic
Heroes don’t die from one bad roll.
They fall after the story earns it.
🎭 DESCRIBE, DON’T JUST SUBTRACT
Don’t say:
“I lose 7 HP.”
Say:
“The blow knocks the wind out of me and I stagger back.”
Numbers track the danger.
Descriptions bring it to life.

🎲 FINAL THOUGHT
Hit Points tell us how close you are to falling.
Armor Class tells us how hard you are to hit.
Damage tells us how hard the world pushes back.
If you remember nothing else, remember this:
“HP is endurance. AC is defense. Damage is pressure.”
You’re not counting wounds.
You’re counting how long the legend lasts ⚔️❤️🎲
