Lesson 3
What is a Player Character (PC), and what do they do in the game?
In Dungeons & Dragons, the story is built together at the table—but it comes alive through the characters you play.
A Player Character, or PC, is you in the world of the game.
It’s your hero, your alter ego, your spark of imagination turned into action.
You don’t just watch the story unfold—you shape it, one choice, one roll, and one battle at a time.

🎭 WHO IS A PC?
A Player Character is:
-
A unique individual in the story world
-
Created and controlled by you, the player
-
A mix of race, class, background, stats, personality, and goals
-
A protagonist in an epic tale of danger, magic, and transformation
You decide who your character is:
-
What they look like
-
What drives them
-
What haunts them
-
How they fight, how they feel, how they grow
Are they a stoic half-orc fighter with a buried past?
A rebellious elf mage fleeing a magical destiny?
A goofy goblin bard who believes in friendship and explosive poetry?
Whatever you imagine, that’s your PC.
🎲 WHAT DOES A PC DO IN THE GAME?
Your Player Character is your agent of action in the world. Through them, you:
-
🌍 Explore ancient ruins, mysterious forests, magical cities, and deadly dungeons
-
⚔️ Battle monsters, villains, rival factions, or even gods
-
🧩 Solve puzzles, riddles, and moral dilemmas
-
🎭 Roleplay conversations, relationships, and dramatic moments
-
🗺️ Travel across realms, undertake quests, uncover secrets
-
🎁 Loot treasure, discover artifacts, gain power
-
🧠 Make decisions that affect the story forever
-
🌟 Level up, gain skills, unlock abilities, and become something greater
Your PC is a central pillar of the adventure.
The story bends and twists based on what you do—or don’t do.

🧠 WHAT DO I CONTROL?
You control every decision your character makes, like:
-
What they say in dialogue
-
What actions they take in battle
-
What risks they’re willing to take
-
How they treat others
-
What they pursue, believe, or fear
The DM (Dungeon Master) plays the world, its people, and the consequences.
You play one bold life inside it—and their path is yours to define.
🧬 THE EMOTIONAL CORE: WHY IT MATTERS
Your PC is not just a sheet of stats.
It’s the voice you never used.
The courage you’ve hidden.
The pain you’ve imagined.
The dream you never said aloud.
In D&D, your character might fall in love, lose a friend, become a king, slay a god, or sacrifice themselves for the world.
They might cry. They might change.
You might change.
That’s the magic of roleplaying:
The game becomes more than numbers—it becomes personal.
And your PC becomes something unforgettable.
🧙♀️ EXAMPLES OF PLAYER CHARACTERS
-
Kallista, Tiefling Sorcerer
Born under a cursed star, she hides a terrible power inside her and dreams of changing fate. -
Durgron, Dwarf Paladin
Once a war criminal, now sworn to protect the innocent—even if it costs him everything. -
Elira, Elf Ranger
Silent, patient, deadly—she watches the forest like a ghost and speaks only to animals. -
Finnick, Halfling Rogue
A lovable thief with quick hands, a quicker smile, and a vendetta against the Duke who burned his village.
You can be a hero.
A monster.
A joker.
A poet.
A mystery.
You can even be a talking cactus who casts fireball with their mind.
If it fits the tone of the world and the rules of the game, it’s fair game.
🧝 THE PC IS YOUR INVITATION TO THE WORLD
Dungeons & Dragons is a collaborative storytelling game.
Each PC is one of the main characters in that story.
Without Player Characters, there is no story. No growth. No glory.
Just empty maps and silent dice.
But when you step into your character’s boots, when you speak with their voice and act with their intent…
That’s when the magic begins.
🧙 FINAL THOUGHT:
A Player Character is your portal into a world of wonder—and the most powerful tool you have is your imagination.
They don’t have to be perfect.
They don’t have to be strong.
They just have to be yours.
And like every great legend…
They start at Level 1.
