Zarek: When the Ghosts Learned to Wear Flesh

For a long time, the greatest weakness of the Sumaya had been the same thing that made them terrifying.

They were spirits.

They could cross walls.

They could hide from ordinary senses.

They could drain living beings.

They could observe civilizations from within their own cities without needing ships, doors or physical weapons.

But they could not truly belong to the material world.

They could visit it.

They could wound it.

They could feed upon it.

They could create the lesser Rapax from accumulated spiritual energy.

But they could not remain inside flesh.

Every attempt ended the same way.

The body rejected them.

Collapsed.

Died.

Until Nexyra.

Until the Insectoides.

Until stolen DNA revealed the missing architecture.

The Sumaya did not copy the appearance of the Insectoides.

They stole something much more valuable.

They learned from the extraordinary stability of their genetic design—how multiple complex biological systems could coexist beneath a single identity, how flesh could adapt without losing cohesion, how radically different structures could remain part of one living organism.

The Sumaya combined that knowledge with the bodies they had stolen from hundreds of worlds.

They experimented.

Failed.

Experimented again.

Thousands of bodies were destroyed.

Then one survived.

A Sumaya entered stolen flesh.

The body convulsed.

Its bones rearranged.

Its nervous system ignited.

Its eyes opened.

And the spirit remained.

For the first time, a Sumaya had not merely touched physical reality.

It had been reborn inside it.

The Inferno gave this new form a name.

RAPTAX.

The Rapax had been creatures created by the Sumaya.

The Raptax were different.

They were Sumaya themselves given flesh.

And once they discovered how to become physical...

they needed somewhere to learn what their new bodies could do.

They chose the world of Zarek.

The People of the Flame

Zarek belonged to an ancient reptilian people whose civilization had developed along a profoundly Skuda path.

They had technology.

They understood astronomy.

Their cities possessed advanced infrastructure and weapons.

But their greatest achievements had never been mechanical.

They were a people of innate power.

Magic did not begin for them with books.

It began with blood.

Certain members of their species were born capable of feeling energies that others could only study.

Fire.

Force.

Spirit.

Matter.

The invisible pressure between physical existence and the deeper layers of reality.

These individuals became Sorcerers.

Not because somebody taught them magic.

Because something inside them already knew how to answer when the Cosmos called.

Zarek had been one of them since childhood.

ZAREK

The first time Zarek produced flame, he was six years old.

He had been angry.

A training instructor had taken away a carved animal his mother had given him.

Zarek shouted.

The instructor's table caught fire.

Nobody punished him.

They celebrated.

Among his people, spontaneous manifestation meant only one thing.

The child carried the Gift.

Years of discipline followed.

Because raw Sorcery without control was not power.

It was catastrophe.

Zarek learned to compress flame between his hands until it became almost white.

He learned to manipulate kinetic force.

To create protective barriers.

To sense spiritual disturbances.

To channel magical energy through the long ceremonial staff he carried into battle.

By adulthood, he had become one of the strongest Sorcerers of his generation.

But he remained Ordo.

Controlled.

Methodical.

Precise.

His people did not admire someone because they possessed extraordinary power.

They admired someone who could possess extraordinary power without allowing it to possess them.

Zarek believed that completely.

Until the day the sky opened.

The First Body

It began with a meteorological warning.

Then seismic disturbances.

Then something much stranger.

The planetary spiritual observatories detected hundreds of entities entering the atmosphere.

Not ships.

Not energy signatures.

Souls.

The warnings spread quickly.

Sumaya.

The name was already beginning to circulate between distant civilizations.

Stories from Kryndor.

The Hollowing of the Minas.

Reports from Ghorvann.

Bodies stolen by Rapax.

Rumours of a forbidden Universe.

Zarek had heard them.

He had considered many exaggerated.

Then something fell from the sky outside the capital.

It hit the ground hard enough to create a crater.

Zarek arrived with other defenders.

Smoke filled the impact zone.

Something stood inside it.

At first it looked almost humanoid.

Then it straightened.

Too tall.

Its body appeared assembled from incompatible anatomies.

Reptilian muscle.

Sections of unfamiliar chitin.

Bone structures belonging to no species Zarek knew.

Artificial components fused directly into flesh.

The creature opened its eyes.

Zarek immediately felt the spiritual presence inside it.

He had encountered spirits before.

This was different.

The flesh was not inhabited by its original owner.

Something else sat inside.

Something ancient.

Hungry.

The creature looked at Zarek.

Then smiled.

Zarek raised his staff.

“What are you?”

The answer came in a broken approximation of their language.

“Here.”

Zarek frowned.

The creature touched its own chest.

“Finally.”

Then it attacked.

Raptax

Zarek had fought powerful creatures before.

This thing moved differently.

It was learning its body while using it.

The first punch missed by almost a metre.

The second came closer.

The third struck Zarek's magical barrier exactly where it was weakest.

Zarek immediately understood.

“It adapts.”

The Raptax attacked again.

Zarek unleashed fire.

The creature screamed.

Flesh burned.

Good.

Physical body.

Physical vulnerability.

Zarek increased the heat.

The Raptax stumbled.

Then its skin changed.

Black tissue spread across the burned surface.

The next blast did less damage.

Zarek stared.

“No.”

Another defender attacked with electricity.

The Raptax convulsed violently.

Effective.

The Sorcerers switched tactics.

Lightning.

The creature fell to one knee.

Then its nervous system began altering.

Third electrical strike.

Less effect.

Fourth.

Almost none.

Zarek whispered:

“It isn't healing.”

The commander beside him understood.

“It is rewriting itself.”

The creature stood.

Smiled again.

Then the sky became black.

The Invasion

Thousands descended.

Not Rapax.

Not ghosts.

RAPTAX.

Sumaya clothed in stolen biology.

Some fell like living artillery.

Others opened wings copied from species taken on distant planets.

Some wore bodies assembled from multiple victims.

Others resembled grotesque approximations of warriors whose corpses had been harvested during previous invasions.

Every one of them carried a Sumaya consciousness.

Every one could learn.

Every one could adapt.

And for the first time...

the Sumaya were no longer afraid of matter.

They had come to conquer it.

The first city fell in forty-seven minutes.

The second lasted three hours.

The defenders fought with everything they possessed.

Sorcery turned the sky red.

Entire formations of Raptax disappeared beneath storms of fire.

Warriors charged through streets while magical shields protected civilians.

Ancient defensive structures awakened after centuries of silence.

Zarek fought at the centre of it.

He became a moving catastrophe.

Fire erupted from his staff.

He tore stone from buildings and launched it through enemies.

Force fields shattered beneath his hands.

He lifted one Raptax into the air and crushed its body against another.

For the first hour, Zarek believed they could win.

The Raptax died.

Dozens.

Hundreds.

Then the second generation attacked.

And the fire no longer worked as well.

“They're sharing information!”

The message travelled through every remaining command channel.

Raptax killed by Sorcery had taught the others.

Not consciously after death.

Somehow information from their encounters was passing through the Sumaya network.

Fire resistance increased.

Shield frequencies changed.

Their movements became better coordinated.

They learned defensive patterns.

They learned where Sorcerers needed concentration.

They learned which warriors were commanders.

They learned how the cities were built.

The invasion was not simply destroying the planet.

It was studying it while destroying it.

The City of Ash

Zarek returned to his home district after twelve hours of continuous battle.

Nothing remained.

His temple was gone.

The market where he had grown up was burning.

The great stairs leading towards the ancestral sanctuary had collapsed.

He searched for survivors.

Found three children beneath a shattered wall.

An elderly woman.

A wounded soldier.

Then he found his brother.

Dead.

Zarek knelt.

His brother's weapon remained in one hand.

His other arm was missing.

Zarek stared at him for several seconds.

No words.

No screaming.

The battle continued behind him.

He reached down and closed his brother's eyes.

Then something landed in the street.

A Raptax.

Zarek turned.

Another landed.

Then another.

Nine.

They had found him.

One of them pointed towards the dead body.

The others began moving towards it.

Zarek understood immediately.

“No.”

A Raptax grabbed his brother by the leg.

Zarek's magic exploded.

The street disappeared beneath fire.

Windows shattered for hundreds of metres.

The Raptax carrying his brother was torn apart.

Zarek crossed the distance before the corpse hit the ground.

He caught his brother.

Placed him carefully behind himself.

Then faced the remaining creatures.

“You have stolen enough.”

His eyes burned.

The Raptax attacked.

Zarek stopped being careful.

The Sorcerer Unbound

Sorcery was born inside him.

For years he had been taught restraint.

Measure.

Control.

Never channel more than the body could survive.

Zarek abandoned those lessons one by one.

Energy ripped through his muscles.

His scales burned.

Blood ran from his nose.

The air surrounding him distorted.

A Raptax charged.

Zarek raised one hand.

Its body stopped.

He closed his fist.

Bones collapsed inward.

Another attacked from behind.

Zarek turned and released a wave of fire so violent that the creature became a silhouette of ash before reaching him.

Three more came.

Lightning crossed between them.

One exploded.

The others adapted.

Zarek changed element.

Stone erupted from beneath their feet.

Then force.

Then flame again.

Never repeat.

Never allow them time to understand.

That became his strategy.

The Raptax adapted.

So did he.

Sorcerer against adaptive predator.

Instinct against stolen evolution.

For several minutes the street became one of the most violent places on the planet.

When it ended, Zarek remained standing.

Barely.

Eight Raptax were dead.

The ninth crawled away with half its body missing.

Zarek walked towards it.

The creature looked up.

“You... change.”

Zarek stared.

“So do you.”

He drove his staff through its skull.

Extermination

But individual victories meant nothing.

The planet was dying.

Raptax flooded cities.

Every hour they improved.

They had begun the invasion crude.

By the second day they were using stolen weapons.

By the third, some could manipulate basic magical techniques copied from captured Sorcerers.

By the fourth...

the defenders began finding Raptax wearing the faces of the dead.

Not perfectly.

But close enough.

A commander killed during the first assault returned leading enemy troops.

A mother saw something resembling her son standing among the monsters.

A warrior hesitated when an enemy spoke with his dead sister's voice.

That hesitation killed him.

The Raptax were learning another weapon.

MEMORY.

Zarek watched one of the capital's defensive towers collapse.

Thousands died beneath it.

The surviving leadership finally issued the order nobody wanted to hear.

Evacuation.

The planet could no longer be held.

There were too few ships.

Everyone knew what that meant.

The evacuation was not salvation.

It was selection.

Children first.

Essential specialists.

The wounded who could survive transport.

Then whoever could reach the ships before the final perimeter collapsed.

Zarek refused a place.

“You're one of the strongest Sorcerers alive,” the evacuation commander told him.

“Exactly.”

“You're more valuable aboard the ship.”

“I am more valuable between the ship and them.”

The commander stared at him.

Zarek looked towards the advancing Raptax.

“Go.”

The Last Gate

The final evacuation zone was a valley surrounded by ancient stone formations.

Thousands of survivors crossed towards departing vessels.

Behind them, the Raptax came.

Zarek stood among fewer than two hundred remaining defenders.

Fighters.

Sorcerers.

Archers.

Soldiers.

Priests.

No one spoke.

There was nothing left to say.

A warrior beside Zarek looked towards the horizon.

“My family already left.”

“Good.”

“They're on the third ship.”

Zarek nodded.

The warrior smiled.

“So I only need to die slowly.”

Zarek looked at him.

“Try not to.”

The warrior laughed.

Then the horizon moved.

Raptax.

Thousands.

Zarek raised his staff.

“Hold.”

The creatures approached.

“Hold.”

Closer.

The ground shook.

“Hold.”

Zarek could see individual faces now.

Some stolen.

Some assembled.

Some entirely monstrous.

The commander raised her sword.

Zarek whispered:

“For everyone behind us.”

Then:

“NOW.”

The valley exploded.

Magic.

Steel.

Fire.

Blood.

The defenders fought knowing there would be no retreat.

Zarek created barriers while civilians crossed.

Then dropped them to attack.

Then raised them again.

His body began failing.

Every spell cost more.

His hands trembled.

His vision blurred.

Still he continued.

One ship launched.

Then another.

Then another.

Each became a tiny light climbing towards the stars.

The Raptax broke the first defensive line.

Then the second.

The warrior beside Zarek disappeared beneath three creatures.

Zarek incinerated all four.

Another defender fell.

Then another.

The perimeter shrank.

Finally a transmission reached him.

“Last ship preparing to launch.”

Zarek looked behind.

Only several hundred survivors remained.

“Go.”

“Zarek, you are ordered to board.”

He almost laughed.

“Now you remember rank?”

“BOARD.”

Zarek looked towards the Raptax.

Then towards the last ship.

For the first time since childhood, he was afraid.

Not of death.

Of survival.

Because survival meant remembering this.

The cities.

His brother.

His people.

The faces stolen by enemies.

A planet becoming a grave.

He wanted to stay.

To burn with it.

Then he remembered the three children beneath the wall.

Someone had to remember them too.

Zarek turned.

Ran.

The final defenders collapsed behind him.

Raptax followed.

Zarek reached the ramp.

One creature leapt.

Zarek turned and released the last full blast of magic his body could produce.

The Raptax vanished inside white fire.

The recoil threw Zarek backwards into the ship.

The ramp closed.

Engines ignited.

The vessel rose.

Zarek crawled towards a viewport.

Below him...

his world burned.

Cities glowed beneath planetary night.

Some from civilisation.

Most from fire.

Raptax moved across continents.

There were too many.

The planet belonged to them now.

Zarek pressed one hand against the glass.

He did not cry.

Not yet.

Then the ship broke atmosphere.

And only then did he understand.

There would be no counterattack tomorrow.

No reinforcement.

No liberation army waiting nearby.

His people had not lost a battle.

They had lost:

THEIR WORLD.

The Survivors

Only a fraction escaped.

Millions had lived there.

A few thousand survived.

Maybe fewer once damaged ships reached safety.

Zarek walked through the evacuation vessel afterwards.

Families missing children.

Children missing parents.

Warriors staring at nothing.

People carrying tiny objects because they had been the only things they managed to save.

A piece of jewellery.

A photograph.

A ceremonial knife.

A book.

Ash.

Zarek carried only his staff...

and his brother's weapon.

He sat beside the bulkhead.

For the first time since the invasion began, no enemy stood in front of him.

And the grief arrived.

Zarek lowered his head.

His enormous body shook.

He cried until there was nothing left inside him capable of producing sound.

The Birth of a New Enemy

Back on the conquered planet, the Raptax collected bodies.

Millions of them.

The dead were sorted.

Analysed.

Studied.

Sorcerers were especially valuable.

Their genetic structures.

Their nervous systems.

Their relationship with magical energy.

Everything went into the experiments.

The Sumaya had learned to materialise.

Now they wanted to understand:

POWER.

And Zarek's people had provided another library.

Written in flesh.

In the Inferno, Eklis watched the information arrive.

Insectoide DNA had solved the first problem.

How to remain inside bodies.

The conquered world of Zarek offered the next question.

How could those bodies manipulate powers that came from within?

Around Eklis, new Raptax grew.

Some already possessed scales.

Others showed primitive magical manifestations.

Most died.

Some survived.

Eklis watched one lift its hand.

A tiny flame appeared.

She smiled.

Far away aboard an evacuation ship, Zarek woke abruptly.

Something had disturbed his dreams.

He sat in darkness.

For a Sorcerer, magic was not simply something used.

It was something felt.

And somewhere impossibly distant...

Zarek had just felt an echo.

His people's magic.

But wrong.

Foreign.

Stolen.

His face hardened.

“They're using us.”

Nobody heard him.

Zarek stood.

He looked through the viewport towards stars that were no longer home.

The Sumaya had taken his planet.

The Raptax had taken his people.

Now they were taking their power.

Zarek closed one enormous hand around his brother's weapon.

He had survived.

A few others had survived.

That meant the extinction had failed.

Not completely.

And one day, wherever these creatures hid...

someone would reach them.

Zarek's magic began glowing beneath his scales.

Not uncontrolled.

Not wild.

Ordo.

Focused.

Cold.

Intentional.

The Raptax had committed one mistake.

They had left survivors.

And survivors could remember.

Survivors could learn.

Survivors could hate.

Zarek stared into the darkness between Universes.

“Enjoy my world.”

The flame around his hand grew brighter.

“Until I come back for it.”
